PROGRAM AND COURSES OFFERED

The music program at Vanier offers a wide variety of courses to its students. It aims at giving the student a broad and general insight intomusic in preparation for future specialization as a performer, composer, listener, scholar, educator, and/or music entrepreneur.

1. A 2 year pre-University program after which the student goes on to study at the University of his/her choice.
2. A third year option wherein the student is taught the necessary requirements to function successfully and productively as a professional in the field of commercial music.

COMPULSORY COURSES:
Ear Training/Sight Singing/Keyboard Harmony , Principal Instrument, History, Theory

ELECTIVE(MUSIC)COURSES:
Students are assigned 8 courses (2 per semester) from among the following:

Concert Band Small Classical Ensembles Composition
Stage Band Small Jazz Ensembles MIDI Systems
Choir Percussion Ensembles Digital Recording
Chamber Singers Second Instrument Business of Music

Courses offered in the third year option:

Principal and Secondary Instrument, Arranging and Composition with MIDI, Harmony and Applied Ear Training, Ensemble and Improvisation
Classes are conducted in the form of lectures, individual lessons, and group ensemble teaching.
In addition to their music courses, students in the music program are required to take English, French as a second language, Humanities, Physical Education, and Complementary Courses. This is in accordance with the primary aim of Vanier College and the CEGEP system "to provide a thorough general and professional education at the college level for all qualified
graduates of secondary schools in the Province of Quebec."

STAFF AND INSTRUMENTAL INSTRUCTION
The staff at Vanier includes some of the finest professional musicians in Montreal. Many teach in other leading institutions of higher learning in the province of Quebec.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN MUSIC
