Vanier College's Jewish Studies
Programme
is open to all students who wish
to expand their knowledge about Jews, Judaism and Israel. The
programme consists of lectures and films throughout the year,
student coursework (the Major Certificate), and two major college-wide
activities:
Who
Takes Jewish Studies Courses?
|
Vanier College's Jewish Studies
courses
are open to all students studying
in any collegial programme. Jewish Studies courses are interdisciplinary,
ranging through literature, history, religion, language, psychology,
sociology, politics and popular culture. They are designed to
appeal to Jewish and non-Jewish students by enabling them to
see Jewish life and culture in the context of their world as
it relates to their own consciousness and sensibility. This provides
the background necessary to further study in Jewish Studies and
other fields of knowledge.
Earning a Major Certificate involves no burdens or obligations beyond
selecting approved Jewish Studies courses from among your electives,
complementaries, and general studies subjects -- whatever programme you happen to
be in. Successful
completion of this Major Certificate is a sign of your involvement
above and beyond the call of duty of a regular DEC.
Jewish Studies
graduates are automatically eligible for the generous Peter
Kleinmann Memorial Fund Scholarships. Nothing prevents a student
from also receiving certification in another Major
programme (e.g., Women's Studies, International Studies) at the
same time. In fact, a number of Jewish Studies graduates enhanced
their credentials this way, leaving Vanier with very impressive
résumés.
Pick up
our latest Jewish Studies brochure, available in A517 or A286, and submit your application to Ray Shankman (A517),
or Nora Soukiassian (A286).
Or click here
if you'd like to enrol. Once we
have your name, we will keep track of your Jewish Studies credits,
and inform you about special activities, new course offerings,
scholarships, etc.
How
Do I Earn A Jewish Studies Major Certificate?
|
Students are awarded a Major
Certificate by completing either
one of the following course patterns:
|
|
Students may also complete their requirements
for a Certificate by arranging for a Jewish Studies Tutorial.
Transferred credits from other
colleges and universities may be honoured up to 30% of the total
requirement.
What
Jewish Studies Courses Are Available?
|
All Jewish Studies courses are given as normal credit courses within their
respective academic disciplines. Course descriptions may be found
under the listings of English, Modern Languages, Humanities,
Political Science, Sociology, etc. A sufficient number of the
required "Core" and "Related" courses is normally available on a rotating basis
over a two-year period.
Jewish Studies
Projects
are possible in a large number of courses, with the teacher's
consent. An updated list is published every semester. Students
expand this list by asking their teachers whether they may choose
a "Jewish Studies" subject for a project (to be worth
at least 25% of the total grade) in their course.
